What’s so important about a colour? Do we care what the Pantone colour of the year is? Does it make a difference to your outfit choices???

I have to say that I was very excited Ultra Violet was announced as the 2018 Pantone colour of the year because I’ve loved all shades of purple for a long time. One of my first cars was purple, my boxing gloves are purple, my bridesmaids wore lavender dresses and my latest tattoo has purples flowers on it.

I love how it pops without being too harsh or over powering…

Yes, I’m so mad for purple that I’m not sure why it took me so long to work it into one of my racewear outfits. I decided to plan a whole outfit around a purple colour palette for Melbourne Cup last year in 2017. With help from SA designer Couture + Love + Madness, along with many hours sewing lace and cutting out little leather leaves (for those who follow me on Instagram you know my pain), this is what I came up with. Thanks to Richard Shaw for the great pics xx

There’s no doubt that colour choice is very important, especially when you are up on stage competing in FOTF. Colours say a lot about our mood, personality and many believe it to be a way to convey deep messages. Ultra Violet is not a new shade, and although it’s been put to the forefront for 2018, we can see glimpses in other eras too…

The choice of Ultra Violet came by the ‘Pantone powers that be’ deciding that the connotations of this colour are what we need in the world right now. Unlike a romantic lavender shade Ultra Violet is darker, deeper and moody. It’s often been associated with royalty, decadence and drama. This colour can also be energising and inspiring by promoting healing and expression. But all those things aside, if you don’t like it, then don’t wear it. Here some ideas of how to play with different shades of purple next time you are planning a race day outfit. Add a little or a lot, it’s up to you!
