Want to go dark without getting lost in the black? Then navy is the perfect alternative when planning an outfit for the races in the cooler months. There’s no hiding from autumn or winter ladies! The low temperatures are starting to creep in and I’m sure you are busily planning your race day outfits so here’s some ideas to get you thinking for the seasons ahead.

Navy can be a sophisticated and rich base to work from or you can make it the accent colour as part of a complex colour scheme. Navy works perfectly with everything from primary colours to pastels. It is always timeless so spending a bit more on some staple navy items of clothing or accessories are a safe investment for the future.

I love wearing and styling navy for the races. For Adelaide Cup I knew that I wanted to mix some autumn base colours together even though it is held right at the beginning of the season. Quite often the weather can be warm for Adelaide Cup so my aim was to work in a trans-seasonal headpiece with comfortable yet stylish options.

I was tossing up between a white skirt and navy pants to wear with my ruffle top. After planning lots of scenarios with Pic Collage I chose to go with the Adele Tie Waist Pants from Forcast (the navy are sold out but you can get them in salmon, white or black).

My top was the feature piece and I collaborated with Adelaide Designer Ebony from Blank Slate (@blank.slat.e) to narrow down a colour scheme. I was in love with how the colours ran together and although the rich burgundy and navy stand out, there are also softer light blue and even pink tones through it. This means I can work it into another outfit later down the track.

The headpiece incorporated 2 ideas that I had been planning to test for a while. It definitely wasn’t the most comfortable piece I’ve made but I lasted the day out in it.

Here are some other outfits I’ve worn in the past with navy (I won my first even FOTF in navy and green in Darwin).
