As a Mum online shopping is an absolute god-send, although my credit card doesn’t agree with that sentiment at the end of each month. Trying on clothes in store with two little ones is the very thing nightmares are made of, for me and the shop attendant. It’s much more convenient to shop in my pyjamas while watching the Bachelor… and a lot less stressful!

While convenience is a major draw card the reality of online shopping is that you rarely end up with a ‘happily ever after’ story. I send back about half of what I order because A) I’m fussy and B) I’m not built like a model, so clothes never look the same on me as they do online. I’m sure most of you can relate to that frustration! Women’s bodies vary so much and one size most definitely does not fit all. Quite often you need to make use of the return policy and keep searching to find exactly what you are looking for.

Recently I bought a ‘dress’ from ASOS because I loved the sleeve detail. As you can see it is more like the length of a t-shirt. I’m no spring chicken so I knew this little number wouldn’t be getting a run in public without some serious tweaking.

Because my ASOS dress/top is a fitted shape, rather skater or flared, it goes quite well under many of my skirts. I experimented with a few pieces I had in my wardrobe and this is what I came up with….DRESS UP TIME!

My dress is sold out so I have put together some cute alternatives that you can mix and match. These mini dresses will fit perfectly under each of the midi skirts I have found just for you!

I have used this technique when I wore a pencil skirt under my spotted skater skirt,  I added a peplum top to create a multi layered outfit – which to my surprise won me best dressed at Strathalbyn in 2015.

Here are 6 ‘skirt over dress’ style boards with outfits that you can purchase online right now from the comfort of your couch, while you are breastfeeding at 4:00am or when you sit down to relax with a cuppa after the kids are in bed.

So if you are searching for the perfect top try thinking outside the box and layering up your favourite clothes for a guaranteed unique look that no one else will have at the track. It’s a budget friendly way to get the most out of your clothes and step up your style at the same time!

Happy shopping and most importantly, have fun!
