Spring is here and the Melbourne Cup Carnival is only weeks away! I’m sure you’ve started to sort out your outfit and chosen a milliner, but have you thought about your Melbourne Spring Carnival accommodation? Time is of the essence and you better get your plans finalised sooner rather than later.
Melbourne Cup Carnival is one of the biggest sporting events in the Nation, with over 100,000 people flocking to Flemington Racecourse on each major race day of the Carnival. The Carnival sees visitors coming to Melbourne from Australia and internationally so finding accommodation can be tricky. Seasoned Melbourne Cup Carnival goers get wise very quickly and book their accommodation for up coming years.
The major race days for the carnival are
Saturday October 29th AAMI Victoria Derby Day
Tuesday November 1st Melbourne Cup Day
Thursday November 3rd Crown Oaks Day
Saturday November 5th – Emirates Stakes Day
We suggest finding accommodation within 5kms of Flemington Racecourse to avoid driving. Public transport and walking is your best bet when trying to get to the track. We have catered for those who love to splash out on a 5 star hotel, those who prefer a serviced apartment and we have also looked for the budget conscious.
Flemington its self is a bustling residential suburb with popular shopping destinations and a great selection of restaurants, cafes and bars. Travelling to the racecourse on race days is as simple as hopping on a train and alighting at the designated racecourse station, right at the entrance of the track. However finding available accommodation in the suburb of Flemington isn’t that easy!
We found the best option, still with rooms available is the Quest Flemington Serviced Apartments, with a rating of 4 stars. Quest offers Serviced apartments with up to three room (which is great for larger groups). It also has a gym, tennis court and an out door pool, onsite car parking, wifi and a full kitchen in every room.
North Melbourne Accommodation
Only a stones throw away from Flemington Racecourse, North Melbourne is another great option for a place to stay. Again getting to and from the track is very simple, with a quick 3 to 4 stop train ride to the track’s entrance. The northern suburbs are classed as a little more upmarket with boutique shops and plenty of places to dine. We were able to find a few good accommodation options, 3 star serviced apartments and a couple of and some 4 star options as well.
The Larwill studio is a boutique hotel dedicated to Australian artist David Larwill. With the bright and playful works of Larwill hanging from the walls tying in to the contemporary design of the hotel. Situated just a stones throw away from the racetrack as well as the Melbourne Zoo, Queen Victoria Markets and the CBD. This 4 and a half star hotel offers rooms with multiple bed options, king, queen, twin etc.
ALT Tower is 4 star accommodation providing a comfortable base and has stunning unique views of Melbourne and offers free onsite car parking. There is a sauna, a rooftop terrace and a fitness centre as well as a day spa that provides a variety of treatments and a chance to relax.
The City Edge is a 4 star Apartment Hotel, offering apartment style rooms equipped with a kitchenette with a microwave and a refrigerator. They all have a flat-screen TV, a private bathroom and tea and coffee making facilities as well as an onsite restaurant.
This 3 and a half star option looks pretty basic, but still comfortable. As the name states it offers motel rooms and serviced apartments that have a few bed and room options.
Footscray is an ethnically diverse area located in the Western suburbs of Melbourne. With a vast selection of Asian restaurants and grocery stores you will not only be able to find a cheap and cheerful place to eat, but it is also a good option for those looking for cheaper accommodation. If you’re on a budget and you’re only looking for a place to get ready and somewhere to lay your head after a big day at the track, then this is probably your best bet. Accessing the track is super easy with Footscray Station getting you dropped off right at the entrance after a short train ride.
Keep in mind that this option is more of a motel feel, it is quite basic ‘No Frills’, but has all you need.
