MILLINER PROFILE: FASCINATING HATS
Describe your style in 3 words or less?
Modern classic abstract
What are your achievements as a business?
Since starting my business I now have a number of boutique outlets for my hats and a group of regular clients from both Melbourne and country Victoria who regularly order their race head wear from me. I have been honoured to have been a participant in the invitation only Millinery Award section of the Myer Fashions on the Field competition on Oaks Day for the past three years. I also run hats stalls at some ladies’ luncheons in the lead up to the spring racing carnival.
Where do you get inspiration?
I like to research millinery styles of the past and at the same time keep my eye on new trends. Whilst I think that the basic traditional millinery materials are always the starting point for creating a hat or headpiece I also think that it is a must to keep looking for inspiration from the natural world around us. I am also keen to experiment and will work with the latest available materials and create pieces using the fusion of different ones that will work well together. Changing technology such as laser cutting and 3D printing may well be a part of the regularly used millinery materials of the future, provided that they are widely available to the millinery community at a reasonable price. My millinery style is modern classic with a twist.

What do you love about millinery?
I love the creative process that you need to start when thinking about a new hat or headpiece and the challenge of making various different materials work together to create a pleasing piece that works for a particular client or to put up for sale. There is also the technical side of making the creation work on a practical level so that it is comfortable and durable.
What’s an unknown fact about yourself?
I love playing golf and one ambition long time ambition is to own a successful racehorse.
What can your customers expect if they purchase from you?
They can expect to own a piece which is unique and has been put together with care and thought.
