Spring is just around the corner… can you feel it? The change in season really does signify that better things are coming. Better weather, better events and better fashion. Winter fashion just doesn’t excite me, but dressing with sunshine in mind, now that is a whole lot more fun.

It’s part of my early planning stages to scour Vogue or Pinterest for inspiration and go on a little virtual shopping escapade to the land of ‘you’re dreaming girl’.  These dresses from Rodarte are what spring is all about – feminine shapes and colours with just a dash of romance! Seeing the fashion swing from heavy knits to airy fabrics is exciting and designs from Sachin & Babi, Johanna Ortiz and Carolina Herrera are proving it’s all in the details. Bringing a touch of manliness and practicality into spring are structured shirts and pant suits, looking and feeling confident isn’t just men’s business. Prepare yourself to see lots of voluminous waves and whole lot of va va voom this spring!

If I had a spring 2017 wish list this is exactly what would be on it. Everything I’ve found is well out my budget but there’s still some ideas you can take away for your own spring racing outfit. It is important to remember to use designs for inspiration not replication so take what you see and put your own spin on it. All images are from Vogue.

A strictly black and white dress code may seem restrictive but I love that there are endless possibilities when planning for Derby Day. Spots, stripes, florals, block colours…. There’s so much to choose from depending on whether you want to look daring in bold stripes or dainty in a soft floral print. Monochrome fabrics are easy to source and many of them mix and match well together. If you don’t want to go all out try going for a sleek look with either an all black or all white ensemble.

Bows aren’t just for shoe laces and little girl’s plaits. An oversized bow can be functional or the feature of your outfit. A soft bow will look feminine while a stiff and angled shape will give a bit more attitude. With many other stylish options it’s easy to create your own removable bow at home so get the sewing machine out and have a go (check out Spotlight for fusible webbing to give your material more shape if you want a bow that ‘stands to attention’).

These shirts are everywhere and can be worn with a pair of jeans out to dinner or dressed up with a pretty skirt for an afternoon winery tour. They can be tied up with a bow, half bow or even in a knot with the ends hanging down. You can even try layering a bodice over the top for a more lady like twist or turn the collared shirt on its head by doing the buttons up in your own order – after all you make the rules. Additions like stripes, flounces or asymmetric necklines take the boring man shirt from corporate to ultra cool.

With it’s cool undertones blue complements most complexions. It’s an easy colour to wear which explains why variations of the shade are popular every season. It’s calming yet has a very striking effect on stage especially in a pretty print. Blocks of blue work well and can be matched with a range of colours or even metallic accessories. Although navy blues are usually better suited to the cooler months it really is a flattering colour for all body types.

Suits aren’t just for the blokes and with the unpredictable spring weather they can be a very practical option for the races. To avoid looking like a ‘business babe’ steer away from collared shirts. Modest jumpsuits are also very classy and comfortable but make sure you try on before you buy to ensure the mid section fits.

It’s the Pantone colour of the year so if you’re feeling adventurous why not jump on the green bandwagon too? Fluro and neon hues are eye catching but if you are feeling cautious you can start by trying a pastel shade. Prints are also a great way to ease into wearing green if you aren’t sure about venturing into the so called ‘unlucky’ colour palette.

Off the shoulder has been the stand out trend this year and shows no signs of slowing down. The variety of cut outs and angles are endless so experiment with a style that suits your body shape. Strapless is still seen as a ‘no-no’ for FOTF and if you are going off the shoulder just keep it classy, the track isn’t a night club.

Ruffles are another trend which have stuck around this year and personally I can not get enough of these delicious frills of fabric. Johanna Ortiz knows how to create elegantly draped waves that are structured and stylish. Volume minus the ‘fluff and puff’ is a perfect way to stand out and create some ‘wow’ factor. If you don’t love lots of ruffles you can try them out on a small section of your outfit like a skirt hem or at the end of your sleeves. The key is to just have fun with the flounce!

We’ve seen the emergence of the corset belt this season and although I am not a big fan of this style I do think that statement belts are a great accessory for the races. Take a leaf out of Carolina Herrera’s style book and experiment with wide contrasting belts to add a POP of colour. You can easily cover belts with fabric if you can’t find the right match or even try making your own from scratch (you can buy belt buckles from Spotlight).

Lace has dominated in the past few years with the likes of Thurley and Self Portrait being front runners in the guipure game. My prediction is that heavy lace is on its way out with lighter sheer fabrics making their mark this spring. It’s important to think about what you wear underneath because they can be a bit revealing for the races (especially FOTF), but you can always buy a longer slip or have panels filled in if you need to cover up in certain areas.

Embroidery is big this season and it lends itself perfectly to those who love to add a feminine touch with some DIY. You can sew anything onto an outfit from flowers to beaded cut outs. If you make them removable you can wear the outfit for something else making it thrifty and stylish – the best of both worlds. Even though you may have the same dress as someone if you add your own embellishments there is no way you will look the same. It’s a guaranteed way to avoid the ‘oh snap’ moment and will lift your outfit from great to next level GORGEOUS!

For me the essence of Fashions on the Field (FOTF) is seeing someone’s personality and individuality shine through. Once the Spring Racing Carnival hits we are going to see a swarm of fashionistas at Flemington all parading in their finest and sharing themselves with the world. I love seeing the unique and quirky styles as much as the demure and elegantly dressed. Variety is the spice of life and FOTF during spring is where you will see it all. Hope to see your there, in the mean time happy planning ladies!
